Title shot in the offing for Williams
by Mark Doyle, 02 July 2008

Promoter Frank Maloney has revealed that the winner of Danny Williams’ British heavyweight title defence against John McDermott is likely to be rewarded with a world title shot.

Williams and McDermott collide in Dagenham on July 18 and Maloney is lining up WBC champion Samuel Peter for the victor.

"We were close to making a fight between Danny and Peter for this month, but TV schedules didn't work out,” he explained.

"Danny's defence against John is now virtually a world title eliminator and a big punch could land one of them the jackpot.

"Danny has been revitalised in his last four fights, and is still known in America for his amazing win over [Mike] Tyson and incredible bravery against Vitali Klitschko."

Williams challenged Klitschko for the WBC title in December, 2004 but was stopped in the eighth round.

It wasn't that long ago that Frank Warren was saying Samuel Peter was all set to face either Skelton or Audley. That turned out to be not such a done deal.

So I guess with Williams I will believe it when I see it. But hey, I hope he gets it.

Williams seems a decent enough bloke so good luck to him if he gets the chance.

But a chance at the HW title, a joke, he isn't really good enough, although the HW scene is still a bit stagnant

Why not for Danny, always blown hot and cold and even though he beat the shell of Tyson i will always think he underachieved.

Last couple of years his punch resistance seems to have waned but he will give it his all. Although he may come in at 17 stone or 20 stone!!

Williams shouldn't get a title shot at the moment- although he's a nice guy, I just think there are a few other Heavys out there which are a little more deserving. He'd have a good chance considering the ability of the other heavyweight champions, but I don't think he's beaten anyone of genuine ranking recently, which he'll need to do before gaining another big chance.

Too many undeserving guys getting title shots, the system is corrupt.

I'm glad he's getting the shot cause I like him as a person.
And I wouldn't mind if he won, either... Not because he could actually carry the division, but because he's very beatable and that opens the door for an Arreola, Haye, or Chambers to get into the belt mix...
Not a likely scenerio for Danny of course, but if McCline can come so close...

In the messed up world that is Heavyweight boxing, Williams actually deserves a shot I would argue, if one can be orchestrated for him. Having been succesful, quietly and without fuss overseas, if he can perform on Friday and win over a small proportion of the British public again, I don't see why he shouldn't get a shot at Peter.

Haye vs Williams at Wembley Stadium anyone?
